This is an introduction to acoustics and vibration phenomena in the COMSOL Multiphysics environment including structural-acoustics couplings and piezoelectricity. We will demonstrate simulations of both elastic and fluid waves: how a vibrating structure induces pressure waves in a surrounding fluid as well as how the surrounding fluid acts as an impedance load on the vibrating structure and how it changes its frequency characteristics. Modal, frequency-response, and transient simulations are covered.

Frank de Pont
He holds a Master’s degree in Mechanical Engineering. The first years of his career he specialized on numerical methods for lifetime prediction of fiber reinforced plastic- and rubber components within a wide range of external conditions such as airflow, impact and wear. After joining COMSOL in 2005 he stretched his expertise to the full extent of applied physics: from loudspeakers to water purification, from electro-chemistry to linear electro motors, from superconductivity to thermal management.
This course is suitable for anyone interested in using COMSOL Multiphysics for the mathematical modeling of physics phenomena. An advanced undergraduate/beginning graduate level of engineering or science education is assumed. Also assumed is some familiarity with the basic concepts of acoustics and structural dynamics. Attendees should have an understanding of the COMSOL GUI, model building methods, and multiphysics finite element methods.
